Photo 1 - Edward Earl atop the highest county highpoint
during a guided expedition in May-June 2004. He was the only successful client
among six participants, suggesting that determination and experience are key factors
in addition to favorable meteorology. Summit day featured immaculately clear weather.
Photo 2a - USGS benchmark placed by a 1989 expedition
and as photographed by John Christiana during whiteout blizzard conditions at two in the morning.
No elevation is indicated, and, more noteworthy still, the metal disk lies at a false summit -
fooling their expedition to not reach the true summit.
Photo 2b - The original, uncropped benchmark image
with assorted extraneous objects - including the photographer's cramponed boot and
a spike in the lower right that may or may not be related to the benchmark.
