Bibb County High Point Trip Report

one contour completed of six total

This is a lone spot contour of Bibb county. The other 5 areas are in a gated and posted area by the Black Creek Hunting Club near Eddings Town, and since it is turkey season, we didn't attempt to even ask about access for these.

For the contour on Sand Mountain, take exit 97 from Interstate 59/20 and go southwest 1.2 miles, then turn left onto Grey Hill Road. Follow this 1.5 miles to a 4-way stop in Green Pond, and go straight 1.9 miles and turn left onto Mountain Top Drive. Drive northeast for 2.75 miles where the gravel road curves right. The iron gate was open at the first driveway on the left, so we drove in to ask permission to hike to the summit since the area is posted. We parked near a car and trailer, then knocked there, walked to a house under construction, and then to another trailer under a shed, but found nobody to talk to, so we walked northeast on an ATV trail about 200 yards to the summit while looking for owners. We left without finding anyone except a corn snake just before the summit.

Hopefully someday a new map will show this to be the highest point in the county, and with other contour lines near this one's edge, and a lack of nearby lines on the other 5 areas in the county, it is likely. On the other hand, it may be years if ever before they come out with better maps or more information, so we'll likely return some day to finish the other areas.
