Talked with a local electrician who's done a lot of work at Fort McClellan. He said that it is now wide open
with no military presence.
I drove in the Baltzell gate entrance. The base is a maze of roads going every which way. Heading basically
east toward Morton Hill, I came to a locked gate on Iron Mountain Road. The sign said closed because of
live ordnance in the area. I was still 1.3 miles from the top so I tried several alternates which didn't work
and finally drove out and around to the Highway 9 route taken by Bill Jacobs et al. It was pretty
straightforward from there to near the top with no closed gate.
