Saint Clair County High Point Trip Report

Bald Rock Mtn

Date: April 8, 2002
Author: John Mitchler

This high ridge has a a cluster of 9+ radio towers and one lookout tower and an excellent bald that affords a wonderful view. It is just off I-20 so is convenient to travelers.

From exit 147 from I-20, go north on Kelly Creek Road for 0.6 mile to a stop sign in Brompton. Continue north on Kelly Creek Road. At mile 4.1, turn right (east) on Rocky Road. Note the power lines just before this turn (a yellow siding house is on the left and a brown brick house is on the right). These are the power lines you'll follow up the side of the mountain to the top. Drive 0.2 mile on Rocky Road, and veer right as it turns to gravel. After 0.35 mile, stop.

The trailer house on the left is your point of access to ask permission. A cleared path behind the house leads to the power line right of way and from there it is a steep huff and puff grunt up the side of the mountain. At the top, go right (south) to the lookout tower and beyond to some rock outcrops. Continue further until you come to an open bald with survey markers.

This HP is a drive-up but the Bald Rock Mountain Road is gated at Elbow Gap farther north along AL174. Too bad. It would be nice to visit High Point and Suck Gap along this ridge.
