La Paz County High Point Trip Report

Harquahala Mtn

The other reports describe the long road approach, but I had success on the historic Harquahala Peak Pack Trail from the NW side of the mountain. About eight miles east of Wenden on US 60, look for a solo palm tree on the north side of the road. Nearly opposite this tree is a currently unmarked road going through a gate in the fence towards the peak. Open and close the gate and bump along about two miles to a newly-improved BLM trailhead parking area just beyond horse trailer parking. There's now a bathroom and signboard here. The trail to the top is in excellent shape all the way, with a rock slide area, well- cairned, scheduled to be improved by the BLM in March, 2001. It's 5.5 miles each way with about 3300' elevation gain. Nice BLM improvements on top amid the various historic and not-so-historic structures. Allow 7 hours RT.
