Placer County Highpoint Trip Report

Granite Chief Mountain

Date: September 2, 2008
Author: Ron Tagliapietra

I took the first gondola lift at 9:40 am from Squaw Valley. Lifts cost $22 roundtrip, take 8 minutes each way, and leave every 20 minutes until 4:40 pm. I began hiking at 10 am and hiked a trail to Emigrant Peak, reaching it at 10:30 am.

I then hiked another 30 minutes down the Backside Trail and up Granite Chief. I spent 45 minutes on top taking photos of Lake Tahoe to the southeast, making phone calls, looking at the BM from the 1940s, and signing the register. I returned to the lift by 12:40 and to the car by 12:55 pm.

[Webmaster's comment: It is now known that Granite Chief is not the Placer County highpoint. This report is included for historical purposes and deference to the author who sincerely provided the information.]
