Shasta County High Point Trip Report

Mt. Lassen (10,457 ft)

Date: September 2, 1981
Author: Ron Tagliapietra

The southernmost of the major Cascade volcanoes, Mt. Lassen is the largest plug dome in the world. Its eruption on May 22, 1915 was the most recent volcanic eruption in the contiguous states until Mt. St. Helens.

Take CA 36 east from I-5 at Red Bluff to CA 89. Go north to the park boundary and continue about 8 miles to the trailhead just beyond Lake Helen. The trail ascends 2.25 miles to the interesting lava formations at the top.
