Sussex County Highpoint Trip Report

four areas (75+ ft) and one area (80+ ft)

Stopped at the Mason-Dixon starter marker to the west of Whitesville. It gives you a good starting point.

The first point is about 2-1/2 miles east along Route 54. Straight north into the woods should do it for you and 3 minutes each way seems about right. As an aside, this is NOT the point 5 as shown on the web page.

The other three points in this area present some issues. There is now a working horse farm there and the area has been developed. The two small points close together are inside a field. Based on a view with binoculars from the road, I do not believe they are still over 75 feet. For the third point to the northeast, I continued on 54 to the 1st dirt road, drove up it a way, parked, and bushwhacked northwest through the woods. About where I figured the point should be has been heavily disturbed and no longer looked like much over 70. You can probably ignore all three of these points.

For the point at Cape Henelopen, it costs $8 out of state to get in (half that in-state). Drive to the Fort Miles parking area and walk along the paved path toward the fortifications and dunes. The highest point was obvious but it is on top of concrete fortifications, so I suspected the naturalness of this point. I walked down to the highest point in the dune to the east (more natural looking), then down to the water so I could argue I had walked highest to lowest in this county. Drove to the end of the road (75-foot contour to south) just to cover my bases. Highest area was near the building.

If you are planning to go from here to southern NJ, finish up in Sussex and take the ferry from Lewes to Cape May. That would have saved me a lot of driving.
