Duval County Highpoint Trip Report

Date: April 13, 2007
Author: Bill Jacobs

To be more helpful to county highpointers, Dupont has made it easier to access the Duval highpoint. On SR 228 continue west into Baker County. Shortly thereafter, as SR 228 turns to the northwest, there is a wide swath, newly cut, through the trees (on the left) leading south into the mining areas. There are no signs restricting entry, for now. The road in the swath could require 4WD due to deep sands. It gradually climbs to a high levee-like mound. Turn left (east) along the levee and where you cross back into Duval County is the highpoint, below on the left. (One of those unique instances - Plaquimines, LA is another - where you are within the county boundaries, standing on terra firma, and looking down on the highpoint.) Since there is a rapid rise (for Florida) in the natural terrain, the highest area should be directly below or somewhere nearby in the bushes. Almost a drive-up.
