Holmes County High Point Trip Report

The two areas that top 320 feet elevation in Holmes County line on or almost on the Walton county line about a mile north and a half mile south of FL 185.

From the intersection of US 90 and FL 83 in DeFuniak Springs, go north on 83 about 6.5 miles to its intersection with FL 185. Turn right (northeast) on 185 and go about 7.5 miles to the first left after crossing into Holmes County. (This will be about 0.7 miles west of the county line.) Turn left (north) and follow this road as it curves around to the west. At about 0.7 miles there will be another, poorer road going off to the right (north). Passenger cars should park here, but a high-clearance vehicle should be able to make it right to the HP.

Walk or drive up this road to an intersection at 0.4 miles, then turn left (west) and take that road to the hill crest. At the county line the road is gated and posted but as you're interested in Holmes County, it is of no consequence. The topographic map shows the road passing right over the high area and gives a spot elevation of 323 for this point.

For the second area, return to rte. 185 and turn left (northeast). Go about 400 feet and turn right (southwest). Follow this road as it bends west and goes to the county line at about 1.1 miles. Here there will be a dirt road on the left (south) that goes a half mile or so to some houses. Turn left here and go about 0.2 miles or a bit less and park on the road. Pull as far to the side as you can so that other vehicles may pass.

The area of interest will be on your left (east). Scramble up the embankment and walk into the field for about a thousand feet or so. We thought the house and barn to the southeast inside the 310-foot contour was about at the same elevation as we were; it may be that this field has also been lowered by wind erosion.
