Liberty County High Point Trip Report

Highway 271 shown on the topos is now signed County 1641 as described in Fred Lobdell's report. While rummaging through the forest in the area near Rock Bluff, long before sun up (don't ask), I heard a car come by and stop where mine was parked. To scare off some juveniles casing my car I came barreling out of the trees into the floodlights of the local sheriff. Trying to get control of the situation I asked if he was wondering what I was doing. "You bet I am!" He bought the high pointing story with one exception; this was not the high point. I foolishly began a debate saying our group had thoroughly researched the matter. He explained there was a plaque up the road in a park proclaiming that spot as the highest in the county. Besides, he added (not suitable reading for State Highpointers) it's the highest point in Florida. I mentioned Florida's highest point was up near Florala to which he responded Florala was in Alabama. True, but what was the point in continuing the discussion. He probably thought he had a nut case on his hands and looked anxious to get out of there. "You don't have any problem with me going back into the woods?" "No, but the owner might."
