Burke County Highpoint Trip Report

three areas

Topo Map: Blythe Quadrangle
DeLorme Atlas: Page 37-A9

From US 1GA 4 at GA 88 (Blythe Road) north of Blythe, zero odometer.

0.0 -- US 1/GA 4 and GA 88. Go west on GA 88.
2.5 -- Road on right (signed "no outlet"). Turn right.
2.8 -- Park. Get permission to hike. The high point is about 0.35 mile southwest through fields.
I had to roam around a bit for Area #1 as this is a liner with
higher ground in the county to the north. Return to GA 88.
3.1 -- GA 88, turn right (south).
4.3 -- Power line road (dirt), turn right.
5.1 -- Follow the power line road to a junction at a "POSTED" sign, sandy in spots.
5.9 -- Junction at the sign, turn right up a 4wd track.
6.3 -- Park at another "POSTED" sign.

I hiked cross country bushwhacking through the woods from this spot. Be sure to set a waypoint or compass coordinates to find your vehicle again. I used both and still almost missed it. A safer alternative is to park at the power line road. I hiked 0.5 mile due north, then quartered the area to be sure of hitting the high point at area #2 around the Spot Elevation. I then went southwest 0.4 mile to area #3.

NOTE: I tried many ways to get closer to the three points. The roads shown on the topo map and/or DeLorme are either non-existent or unavailable as private roads. Residents were not helpful and resented my being on their land. There are many hunting stands in the area and lots of "No Trespassing" signs. One gentleman chased me down a 4wd track in a golf cart to ask me to leave. I was told by one lady that it was spring turkey season although I didn't see any hunters or hear any gun discharges.
