Clayton County Highpoint Trip Report

Date: December 2, 2006
Author: Lanny Wexler

My second highpoint of this trip was on Saturday December 2. Once again, the weather was good. Due to clear skies and radiational cooling, temperatures had dropped into the 30s under clear skies and light winds.

Saturday morning featured brilliant blue skies and temps rising thru the 40s under bright sunshine. Jacket weather.

I studied the previous trip reports by Hans Haustein and John Mitchler and they were quite helpful. I realized I couldn't reach this highpoint from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport because I-85, to the west of the airport was a barrier.

The Clayton County highpoint at the driveway entrance to the new Georgia International Convention Center, just west of US 29.

I reached the Clayton County highpoint by leaving my Comfort Inn on Virginia Avenue, located in College Park, GA and walked west to US 29 (also known as Main Street). I almost missed US 29 as Virginia Avenue goes under US 29.

I turned left, south on US 29 and walked south througn College Park, passing a MARTA station and the open land beyond. I crossed Camp Creek Parkway which connects from I-85 and the airport with an exit for US 29 if you were driving. I proceeded perhaps another quarter mile south walking uphill til I sae milepost 17 which is on the east side of US 29. Perhaps, a 100 yards south of mile post 17 is the double lane entrance to the Georgia International Convention Center.

The highpoint I ascertained to be on a grass median island, near the sign which was covered with a colorful flowerbed, still in bloom despite the cold weather. I walked on grass island and on the grass on both sides of the driveway and also on the east side of US 29 to make sure I covered all the bases.

If you do fly into Atlanta and wish to reach Clayton County highpoint and have no car, my suggestion is to pickup MARTA at Atlanta Airport and take MARTA one stop north to College Park Station. Main Street runs parallel with MARTA in College Park and is just west of the station.

Walk south about a half mile on the west side of US 29 and you will arrive at the Clayton County highpoint, at the driveway entrance to the Georgia International Convention Center. The whole trip will cost you $3.50 roundtrip.

In early 2009, it gets even easier. A people mover is under construction that will connect Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport with the Georgia International Convention Center, I believe free of charge.

Now hows that for a gimme!
