Dawson County High Point Trip Report

Black Mountain

Date: July 24, 1999

From Amicalola Falls SP (highest falls in eastern US at about 480 feet) on highway 52, drive 9.5 miles east to the road signed for Nimblewill Baptist Church. Turn left and drive 2.8 miles north to the church. Turn left onto gravel FS 28. Drive this road 7 miles to Nimblewill Gap (3049 ft.) and park. The road is not very good and deteriorates further after entering the NF about half way; however, it was passable for passenger cars.

From here, hike a half-mile through a small gap to the slopes of Black Mtn. The new AT approach trail skirts the mountain on the north, so you can begin bushwhacking whenever you wish. I made the nasty bushwhack to the blackberry-covered summit in a lightning storm worse by continuing southeast. Bringing map and compass is not as useful as consulting them! Well, I finally checked the map and we went west to get back to the trail.
