Houston County High Point Trip Report

two areas about 2 miles northwest of Friendship Church (550+ ft)

Date: December 20, 2002
Authors: Trapper Robbins & Roxanne Everett

The two cohp candidates for Houston County are less than a mile apart in the southwest part of the county.

From I-75 (exit #127, odometer set to 0.0), take Highway 26 west. Go through Henderson and cross SC 41 and SC 7 (1.2 miles). Continue on Route 26 and turn right on Hodges Road (4.5 mile). Follow Hodges Road 2.7 miles to the end where it forms a T junction with Kersey Road (total 7.2 miles from I-75). Both HP candidates are in this area.

The first area is in a field behind a white house south-southeast of the Hodges/Kersey junction. No one was home at this house but there was an older man at the neighboring home (which is very close and shares a driveway). He said that the 2 houses are owned by sisters and he gave us permission to walk a bit behind the house (but clearly didn't want us out there for too long). We wandered the area and the high point appears to be in a field behind a small silo which, in turn, is behind the white house nearest the Hodges/Kersey road junction.

The second hp candidate is about 0.3 mile northwest of the Hodges/Kersey road junction. From the junction, walk northwest on a dirt road through a cotton field. (The man at the other hp area didn't know who owned the field.) Follow this to the edge of a wooded/bushy area (we explored this wooded/thorny/swampy area but later decided it wasn't the hp). Continue on the road along the edge of the cotton field until you come to a rise where several old roads/paths come together. The cotton field is on your right and forms a corner with a pine grove (in front and to the right), and some woods/bushes to your left. We explored/traversed all areas (pines, woods, field) but did not pinpoint the hp.
