Boone County Highpoint Trip Report

three unnamed areas (1,250+ ft)

Boone County's three high point areas are located in Section 8 of Dodge Township.

From the intersection of U.S. Highways 30 and 169, 2 miles west of Beaver, I drove north on U.S. 169 for 9 miles, and turned right onto County Road E18. I drove east on E18 for 10 miles, and turned left onto C.R. R21. At 0.9 mile, R21 curved left, but I continued straight onto Nature (sp?) Road (gravel). I drove east on Nature Road past the high point areas 1/4 mile to the pair of farm places at the southern extreme of the border between Sections 8 and 9, at spot elevation 1189. The northern farmplace looked abandoned, but I approached the southern farmplace (#1400), which was inhabited, but, as I found out when I rang the bell, unoccupied.

I had hoped to get permission from the owner, but didn't want to spend any more time looking for one, so I turned around and parked at the property line nearest the western high point pair.

I walked on the west side of the fence to the westernmost high point area. For the last minute of my walk, I followed old vehicle tracks. From about 1230' elevation, the field ended and the ground above that was grassy. Also, from this point there was a thick, narrow wooded area in place of the fence line, which continued almost to the uppermost contours.

area 1

I arrived in 8 minutes. It had great views.

area 2

Just a few feet away is area 2. It appears higher than both area 1 and area 3, but it is on the west side of the fence, not the east as suggested by the topographical map.

area 3

I arrived at area 3 in 3 minutes. Again, it looked as if area 2 was higher.

As I returned to the woodline, I walked straight into an electric fence (not powered on). This would have really surprised me if I had tried this at night.

I arrived back at my car in 8 minutes -- total time was 20 minutes.
