Fremont County High Point Trip Report

Date: September 7, 2000
Author: Bob Packard

I did this from the Montana side, parking at trailhead for trail #214, Mile Creek Trail, driving E from MT 87 at sign for Mile Creek. Trail does not go where the Targhee Peak, ID quad shows, but rather to a pass with sign reading 9333 NE of Black Mt. (10237). At this pass trail connects to CDT which took me to a 9980 saddle ( sign slightly higher reads Targhee Pass 10,000 ft). From there I climbed Targhee Peak, highest named summit in Fremont Co. CDT went down and NE, I bushwhacked to the 3 candidate points. Middle one is highest, but not by much. NE one is a foot or two lower and S one is out of contention. The two highest are very close so it was easy to detect the small difference with hand level (both ways).

On way back bushwhacked S, W and S again to connect to the trail. This is in area where map shows a trail. Found none nor any indication that there had ever been one.

Statistics: 7.5 hours, 13 miles, 4100 feet gain

Jerry Painter (in his book about 10 ID cohp's) used the Idaho side route for Fremont HP.
