Logan County Highpoint Trip Report

I've been enjoying living west of Rockies (New Mexico) so much that I've often neglected county highpoints on trips out east and back home over the past year. Well the whole family headed home to Peoria, IL for Thanksgiving and we stopped at Elkhart Hill on the drive from St Louis to Peoria.

Tim Worth's trip report provides spot-on directions to the area and we parked the rental PT cruiser at the gate mentioned in his report. Since his visit there have been a couple of developments. First and foremost, the area is now an Illinois Nature Preserve and has signs stating such at the gate. Second, as I was starting the hike up the hill, the landowner pulled up and asked me what I was doing. I replied that I was hiking to the top of the hill and since I was in a nice sweater and jeans he quickly realized that I was probably not a poacher. Apparently he still has a lease (?) on the land but hikers are welcome, he's just trying to discourage game poachers. The hike was short but pleasant, with the fall colors just starting to disappear. The bee keeping equipment is no longer around at the second point but the BM is easily found and there is a grave marker for John Shockey very near the highest point.

All in all, this is a very nice IL highpoint.
