Tazewell County High Point Trip Report

Date: March 31, 2002
Author: Tim Worth

This rural farm county is in central Illinois, east of Peoria. Each of Tazewell's 16 areas are out in crop fields.

From the county courthouse square in Washington, head south on main street which becomes CR2800E. After 3.9 miles, look for a radio tower on the right (west). Park here. The first four points are to the west of the tower. Of these four, the northernmost and westernmost contours leveled equal and higher than the other two.

The other 12 areas are accessible from a cul-de-sac at the end of Woodland Lane, in a large-lot subdivision. From CR2800E, head south a quarter mile to Lakeland Road and turn right (west). Continue 1.3 miles and turn right (north) on Oak Lane. Head north on Oak Lane which jogs right (east) and eventually turn into Woodland Lane. We got permission from a friendly homeowner to walk across his yard to the farm fields to the north and east.

Each of these 12 contours are pretty small, and in the field they are practically indistinguishable - classic Midwestern highpoints. Comparison was not possible with the two HPs in the other cluster, though it's doubtful that any of these points are as high. Hand level comparison amongst each of these 12 areas is an exercise left to a future visitor, though the results would likely be academic. The railroad grade is almost unnoticeable in the field, however we were eventually able to locate it by spotting the grade as at the edge of the woods near Kennel Lake (owned by a sportsman club).
