Lake County Highpoint Trip Report

four areas

These 4 areas are all in the huge gated community, the Lakes of the Four Seasons, population about 10,000. I asked directions to the office, and was allowed in. I visited with office manager, Jean Stoelb, who was quite intrigued to find out the county high points were on the property. She copied my topozone sheet, and plans to write an article on the subject for the community newsletter. All four points are on or near the golf course, which winds its way through the community, so she referred me to the resident pro, Matt Meneghetti, for permission to go on the course.

He was at the driving range, which is at the south end of the large 790' contour, and when I explained my presence, he graciously let me walk up to the northern, higher end of the range. He is the point of contact for future visits, and can be reached at 219-988-2201.

General directions: For simplicity, I've numbered the areas as 1 to 4, from SW to NE. From IN 2, SW of Valparaiso, go west about 5 miles on CR 100S. The first major left after crossing the county line is the entrance road to the Lakes of the Four Seasons, Lakeshore Drive. After passing through the gate, pass over the prominent hump of area #3, and shortly after turn left into the golf course clubhouse parking lot. Walk up a cart path to the left to the 18th green, which is part of area #3, and appeared to me to be higher than the nearby homes. Just to the east is the driving range, with tees at the south end, and a gradual slope uphill toward the northern end of area #4. I found the highest ground at the NE end of the contour, behind some homes. Unless someone on the tee has a wicked slice and is a long hitter, you should be safe at the high point. I'm sure one of these two areas is higher than the tiny areas of #1 and #2. To reach areas 1 and 2, continue further SW along Lake Shore Drive, and turn right onto Sunrise Drive. Follow Sunrise to homes #3053/3054. These homes sit practically on top of area 2. The golf course abuts their backyards, and can be accessed from Ravenwood, around the corner. For area 1, continue on Sunrise, turn right onto Westwood, and go to home #4099, which sits on the high point.
