Owen County High Point Trip Report

These two highpoints are relatively easy to visit, but hard to see on the topo maps. Both are located within the city limits of Owenton, Kentucky.

From the intersection of Route 22 and US 127 in the center of Owenton, proceed north on US 127 for 3 blocks and turn right (east) just past a church. As you ascend this gentle rise, note the large white house surrounded by an iron-post fence to your left. I parked next to the church, across the street from a double garage and walked up the side drive to the house. No one answered when I knocked at the back, but that was probably due to the loud TV/stereo that was playing inside at the time. Fortunately, this is one of those places where you automatically visit the highpoint while approaching to ask for permission. I believe the highest spot is in the back yard between the house, an older building and the swimming pool.

The second area just doesn't show on most topo maps. I found it by checking NGS markers and data sheets for the area. BM Owenton is officially listed as 1001 feet, and is located in the lawn on the northwest corner of the county court house. From the intersection of Route 22 and US 127 in the center of town, go west on Route 22 for just 2 blocks and turn right (north). It appears that the court house was built on the highest spot in the county. I think the highest area is near a large concrete block that sits on a patch of lawn on the northwest side of the court house. I didn't locate BM Owenton in the lawn, but I did find BM 3 Owenton across the street embedded in the sidewalk.
