Perry County Highpoint Trip Report

BM Delphia (2,539 ft)

Date: September 5, 2004
Author: Ken Oeser

This is a shorter route than Levi Foust's and there may even be a shorter one from the west if investigated. I printed directions from the USGS benchmark site and we followed them to a parking area.

From the junction of KY160/KY463 a few miles north of Cumberland, go north on KY463 3.4 miles to the Letcher/Perry county line, continue north another 2.7 miles to Delphia, and turn left onto Bark Camp Branch Road. Follow this narrow, paved road for 1.6 miles to a 3-way split and go straight ahead up a steep gravel road, Whitaker-Gross Cemetery Road, and go 0.3 mile to it's end at a house on the left, at elevation 2050 feet, 0.56 GPS miles from the summit.

Here we knocked and gained permission to hike straight ahead (southeast) up a dirt road to the saddle with Long Arm Branch on the other side, where another gravel road seems to be able to be driven to this vicinity.

From the saddle we hiked up an ATV road west, then southwest for a half-mile to the summit of the ATV road and took a faint woods road right, northwest, 100 yards to the twin summit. We checked two bumps and found BM Delphia on the second.

This was a fairly easy hike along ATV and wood roads the whole way.
