Historical Notes: Baltimore, the nation's fourth largest port, was laid out as a town in 1729 from the lands of Thomas Carroll. By 1745 it had consolidated the older settlement of Oldtown (or Jonestown). The origin of Maryland Baltimore was the Calvert Family, especially Cecil, whose father, George Calvert, had become Lord Baltimore, of the Barony of Baltimore, in Ireland, in 1625. It has been debated whether the name of George Calvert's Irish title and barony comes from Baltimore, a seaport in County Cork, or from an obscure unmapped Baltimore on the River Rinn, in County Longford. Lord Baltimore's barony was in County Longford, and in recent years "Baltimore Fields" and "Baltimore Lane" were discovered there on the River Rinn. However, it was an established custom from Irish lords to take their titles from local seaports. All in all, the evidence seems to favor the origin from Baltimore, County Cork. This is also the opinion of the Irish Placenames Commission.

The Gaelic elements of the name Baltimore are bailte and mora. The meaning is "big houses, homesteads, estates." In 1768 it became the county seat of Baltimore County. In 1851 the city was large enough to become an independent city and the county seat was moved to Towson. A disastrous fire destroyed the downtown area in 1904, but growth and annexation continued until the present boundaries were reached in 1914.

Description of High Point: Residential Area, looks like the road in the middle of the street may be the local high point (~5946 Glen Heights Rd).
