Frederick County High Point Trip Report

Split rock near the old Foxville Lookout (1,900+ ft)

I left the Carroll County Highpoint and proceeded back to Wentz. I continued south on US-30 to Manchester and picked up MD-27 to Westminster. I left Westminster proceeding west on MD-77. Note: There are no signs and it is difficult to find MD-77. I drove around for a while to find it. I then headed west on MD-77 through Thurmont, under US-15, through Cunningham Falls State Park, and Catoctin Mountain Park. You will come out of the parks on MD-77 and it is obvious as you pass all the entry signs on the left. Be looking for Tower Road. Take a left and head south. You will climb for a while and then top out in a clearing with several homes. Continue south and back into the forest. Less than a 1/2 mile into the forest on Tower Road start slowing down and looking to your right. You should be able to find the radio tower.

Park across the road in a crude pullout, rental cars are capable of clearing the rocks. Hike up towards the tower and literally at halfway point between the road and the tower take a 90 degree left and head up the slope through mild growth. You will hit a ridge line follow it up to the highest point. Some notes for you, keep walking up until you reach some very large rocks. I thought that the rock that splits and forms a small animal cave was the highest, which I am assuming is also the one that Roy Wallen was talking about.

Less than a 1/2 mile roundtrip.
