Greene County High Point Trip Report

benchmark on Bassville quadrangle (1,518 ft)

Date: May 26, 2001
Author: Hans Haustein

Drive north from Strafford on State Highway 125 for one mile to the intersection with County Highway C, turn west on Highway C. Follow Highway C until it intersects with Farm Road 223, I didn't write the mileage down but it looks to be a little over one mile from Highway 125. On Farm Road 223 go north for 1.5 miles to a pullout on the west side of the road, this is the drive for the microwave tower access.

As I got out of the car, I heard the distinctive popping noise of an electric fence. The highpoint area was surrounded by an electric fence, so I got back in the car and drove down the road. Then I decided to go back and ask at the house that was next to the tower area to see if the owner of the electrified portion lived there. Luckily the gentleman was out fixing his lawn mower, so no knock at the door was needed. I explained what I was doing, and he was even kind enough to hold down the electric fence with a stick as I crossed.

The benchmark was located about 10' east of the NE corner of the tower 'Keep Out' fence. The actual highpoint area is located to the west of the tower fence. There were several rocks that protruded in this pasture area so it was not clear where the actual highpoint was located. I walked around in circles touching all of the candidate rocks, as the gentleman looked on. I still don't think he new what I was doing, because he ask me as I was leaving 'If I was doing this for the County'. I said, 'No', but didn't try to explain any further.
