Clay County High Point Trip Report

two areas (each 520+ ft with 10 ft contour intervals)
including BM "Barr" (530 ft)

We drove south from Woodland, MS on Hwy. 15 0.4 mi., and turned E (L) onto CR 419. It was 9 mi. to the first R turn in Clay Co. -- the road turns gravel at the county line. Another 3.1 mi. or so on this road gets you to the Clay Co. Fire Tower, sign on the R. Somewhat quaint in that it is one of the few remaining FTs with a resident ranger, make this an enjoyable visit by meeting Ranger Lofton, who gave us permission to follow his Labrador (!) to the top of the 120' tower (I didn't). BM Barr is right there in the yard, but he says that the other closed contour line -- across the road -- is higher. Note that the two, though in separate sections, are almost right across the road from each other. I didn't have my sight-level. The N point does require finding a way up a rather dramatic road-cut bluff.

The T.V. tower on the property, at 1800' tall, currently holds some sort of record for tallest structure of its type. A bit unnerving to stand adjacent to its base.
