Hancock County High Point Trip Report

Date: May 16, 2000
Author: Fred Dale

A most unusual high point! In northern-most Hancock Co., proceed N on Anner Rd. to the New Talavana Community, a large remote Hare Krishna commune. These nice folks were quite interested (though skeptical initially) in my pursuit, and allowed me to walk across their large Brahma pasture to neighboring pinelands to the west. Two hundred feet into the woods I found an old logging road, dirt and well-maintained now, a spur of which took me to a dangerous 30' abandoned well shaft, guarded by some old barge (!) parts. Nearby is the highest discernible ground.

Update 11-14-2017: Hold the presses! I checked out Ben Lostracco's coordinates, comparing it closely to acme, and I paid attention to my own report where I mention going only "200 feet into the woods". Ben went to the correct spot. It is west of where I stopped in the woods, at about N30.629 W89.508, I now believe. Similar north going to spur, yes, but not far enough west. Because there is a small dip to the west of where I stopped, I thought that I had summitted, as I was not using GPS. Ben's position is correct, and he summited the High Point! I did not make it. I must return.

Please pardon my error, lads. Much vicarious adventure this hour! Thank you!
