Lafayette County High Point Trip Report

Thacker Mtn and three points

Date: May 23, 2001
Author: Fred Dale

Thacker Mountain is locally prominent, and feels like a cohp. William Faulkner and I did not get drunk there but I've ascended it several times, years ago. For cohpers, there are three additional points to visit.

Thacker Mountain used to be easily accessible, though I recall the last time I went I had to walk up the old fire tower road, whereas I'd formerly driven up, before it was gated. To find it, just go out Old Taylor Road fom the campus of Ole Miss.

Topo chart

The Holly Springs National Forest points # 1, 2, & 3: From the intersection of Hwys. 6 & 334 on the south bypass around Oxford, go east on 6 6.1 mi. to a left (N) turn just before a bridge (no sign here, but this is CR 225).

Point #1: Go N on CR 225 3.0 mi. to a pullout on the R. Park. Near the rise in the road up ahead BM Stevens' old witness sign is found in the woods. Hidden by foliage, the sign is near a square hole in the ground where the BM may have been, highest ground is any of several tree buttresses.

Point #2 (at the "23" on the quad): Just a tenth mile behind you is the intersection with CR 2066 (signed also FR 849). Take it NE 1.15 mi. to the high knoll in the woods on the R. Apparently, this is posted (to hunting?).

Point #3 (near the spot elevation "612" on the quad): Continue on the same road. Four tenths mile up ahead the road forks; go R -- the road now numbered "827". Then go 1.2 mi. The mapped intersection at spot elevation 612 is seen, but note the S-going road just before it. Not shown on the map, you can park and walk a short way S on it, the hp in the woods on the right. I sight-leveled this locale.
