Webster County High Point Trip Report

Sand Mtn on Europa USGS quadrangle (670+ ft)

Date: March 5, 2004
Author: Hans Haustein

The highpoint area is reached by taking Highway 9 north from it's intersection with Highway 50 in Walthall for 0.4 mile to it's intersection with road from the west (left) with a broken sign the first part reading "Hay_____". Continue west on this road for 1.9 miles to where the paved road turns to gravel/dirt, then continue another 0.6 mile to a road to the south (prior to this you will pass a gated road to the south).

There was an open pipe gate when I visited the area. Go south (left) on this road 0.5 mile to a fork. Stay to the left, then continue another 0.2 mile to a sort of 3-way intersection. Park here.

The middle road of this 3-way fork is signed with "30714 Sand Mtn". It is a rocky road/trail 0.12 mile to the summit of Sand Mountain. The highest natural area seemed to be on the west side of the trail in an area of grass and short pines. There were some unnatural humps of dirt in the area that appeared to be the result of the cutting of the road/trail. Decent views of the surrounding timber land. Nice Mississippi Highpoint. There were no negative postings seen on this route.
