Alamance County Highpoint Trip Report

Date: May 22, 2005
Author: Peter Barr

Unsuccessfully attempted this county high point on a drive from Chapel Hill to Greensboro. I took Fire Tower Road all the way past where it turns from pavement to gravel, and past from gravel to dirt, where it makes a sharp left turn and heads towards the summit. You can see this northerly turn on the topo. However, I turned back as the ruts in the road were monstrously deep and, after attempting a few, I decided that it wasn't worth pushing my luck and getting my not-so-high-ground-clearance and small Acura Integra stuck. Not to mention, I already rattled it off its frame taking the almost 3-mile dirt road to the gate before the summit of Fisher's Peak (Surry NC & Carroll VA hp) the previous Monday.

Would have gotten out and hiked to the summit but my car was already being circled by three intimidating rotweilers who were making it clear they did not appreciate my presence. Likewise is why I chose not to get out and walk to the nearby mobile home and ask permission. Will return sometime with friend's higher ground clearance truck, as this one is just down the road from me.
