Gaston County Highpoint Trip Report
Kings Mountain (1,690 feet)
Date: May 1, 2009
Author: Adam Helman
This effort is part of a
larger journey
collecting southern Appalachian highpoints and prominences in Spring 2009.
Near the summit a sign indicates "End of Trail" just prior to
scrambling atop some boulders. After that effort one turns right
for the true summit a few hundred horizontal feet off.
The right turn effectively reverses the direction taken prior to reaching the sign.
The sign should be disregarded - it is likely placed for insurance purposes.
As Shakespeare wrote,
"Kill all the lawyers."
I measure the summit coordinates as WGS84 (35.20778° N, 81.31256° W)
with 1,667 foot elevation.
I hiked this peak with John Hamann and Scott Casterlin; and concur with
Edward Earl
that it is a fun outing suitable for everybody - highpointer or otherwise.
