Johnston County High Point Trip Report

The two areas that are candidates for the hp of Johnston County lie within a mile of each other a short distance northwest of the town of Clayton. The area is being developed fairly rapidly, as part of the growing Raleigh-Durham area, and it may be that these hills will be built upon in the near future. Indeed, one of them is almost part of a development now.

From the Wake - Johnston county line on US 70, go east on 70 about 1.8 miles. Turn left (north) on Sando Road, and go 0.9 mile, to the first intersection north of the railroad tracks. Turn left (northwest) here onto Main Street and go about 0.45 mile to the first paved right turn. (This road, and the development it leads to, aren't shown on the topographic map.) Turn right (north) and go uphill a few hundred feet until the road turns left (west) into a development.

Park here at this turn in the road and walk north on the east side of the fences marking people's back yards in the development. Walk into the farm field to the HP, which appears to be near the houses.

For the second area, return to Main Street and turn left (southeast). At the intersection with Sando Road, turn left (north) and go about 0.4 mile to the first paved right turn. This should be Covered Bridge Road. Turn right (east) and go about 0.3 mile to a height of land on the road. There will be a road leading into the development on your left (north side of Covered Bridge Road) where you can park. Again, neither the road nor the development is shown on the map. The high area seems to be on the south side of Covered Bridge Road at this point.
