Transylvania County Highpoint Trip Report

Chestnut Bald (6,000+ ft)

Date: August 3, 2006
Author: Don Desrosiers

Based on previous reports, I expected to see this one littered with the corpses and skeletons of cohp'ers who would never get home to fill in their completion maps with red. It was difficult but not unreasonable. I've done worse.

As previously noted, the trailhead is at mile marker 422.4 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Followed Ron Tagliapietra's trip report to the obvious point between Chestnut and Silvermine Bald. Because my blood sugar was approaching single digits, I wisely set a waypoint prior to leaving the MTS Trail. From here the trail was sketchy but could be followed if you paid attention and had a sense of humor. Worked my way up through the woods until the mountain didn't go up any more. The top was slightly flatter than I was expecting. Lots of downed trees.

Going down was much easier.

Got into a campsite before dark. What was I thinking? Delightfully cool above 5000 feet that night.
