Williams County High Point Trip Report

Bull Butte (2,588 ft)

Date: May 5, 2002
Author: Ken Oeser

From Grenora on ND50, drive south on a paved road 18 miles, passing marked West Bonetraill at 14 miles. Turn right (west) and go 3 miles on a gravel road to a left curve, then 0.5 mile and turn right onto a grass lane heading into the field toward Bull Butte. I drove this road in my rental car for 0.5 mile and parked.

Nobody seems to live in the house just south of here; I drove in and checked first, but there is only farm equipment. From the parking area, hike west up to the obvious summit of grassy Bull Butte. The top (with benchmark) is gone, but only a small part which includes the old summit. A section has been bulldozed out for gravel (I guess). The area gone is about 40 - 50 feet wide, so the highest point now is one of the sides, and I circled the pit to get both. With such a small area gone, I'm sure it's still above 2,580 ft, but wonder if we should change this one to 2,580+ ft from it's 2,588 ft status?

Don't forget to see Writing Rocks SHS (two large granite boulders with petroglyphs) north of Grenora if you have time.
