Humboldt County High Point Trip Report

Granite Peak (9,732 ft)

Date: September 24, 2001
Author: Mike Coltrin

I drove 14 miles south on US 95 from the Oregon border to FR 084. This road was signed "Buckskin Canyon Road". It was washboard for the first couple of miles then got better. After a few miles I passed a brown forest service sign that verified this was FR 084. The drive was about 25 miles to Hinkley Summit, a saddle at about 7900 feet. From here I followed FR 536 to a saddle at 8740. (I camped here the night of the 23rd.)

The peak was one thousand feet higher. The route was pretty straightforward but required using hands for balance in a few spots. Benchmark "Spring Butte" was on the summit.

When I departed I drove south from Hinkley Summit on 084. It was well graded for about ten more miles then paved (becoming Nevada 290 at Paradise Valley) the next 23 miles to US 95 south of Paradise Hill Pass.
