Mount Grant

Date: July 1999
Author: Edward Earl

Mount Grant lies in a controlled recreation area on military property; unless you want to climb 7000', you have to borrow the key to the locked gate at Cottonwood Creek above the town of Walker Lake. When I first showed up to get it, I had a brief scare when the guard thought it wouldn't be available until Monday morning, but since I had made prior arrangements, I was able to get it. (Arrangements can be made by calling the security office at 775-945-7101.) The Cottonwood Creek road heads up to a junction at 9100' where a side road heads up to within ~200' of the summit. Those last 200' are a class 2 boulder scramble. To Earlize [climb at least 1000' to the summit] this peak I parked about halfway up the summit road and walked the rest. The view is very nice and includes the northern Sierra and Walker Lake. On the way down the unpaved road I got two flat tires and had to wait in Hawthorne until the next morning to get one fixed and the other replaced.
