Mineral County Highpoint Trip Report
Date: October 2000
Author: Adam Helman
I was mislead into driving up three wrong roads, each gated, by the security personnel at the Army
Ammunitions Depot in Hawthorne, NV. Apart from having lost my telephone reservation made 3 weeks
earlier, they thought I wanted Mt Rose cabins, and only after insisting that something was very wrong did
I discover the correct road out of Walker, NV as per Andy Martin's trip report. This wasted about 3 hours
of precious daylight.
After the 20 mile (one-way) drive to the road's end (a gravel lot),
the summit was a simple class 2 boulder scramble with a 200 vertical foot gain.
Awesome views of Lake Walker seven thousand feet below. From the valley floor Mount Grant itself
appears equally striking - one mammoth of a climb (i.e. sans motorized transport) that tempts me
for some future date.
Note: The latest number to call when reserving the gate keys for the road drive is (775) 945-7101.
Ask for Bobbie Greenwood. You go to bldg 37, room 2 (the Guard Operations Center) within the
Hawthorne Army Depot at the north end of Hawthorne.
