Washoe County Highpoint Trip Report

State highway 431 goes east/west between Reno and Incline, NV and the desired trailhead is accessible from either community. Additionally, there is some confusion, as two highway signs are posted a mile apart (one for E/bound and one for W/bound traffic on NV 431) that both indicate: “Campground ½ Mile” but there is no campground, only the “Welcome Plaza” within that ½ mile!

Upon arriving at the “Welcome Plaza” parking lot, on the eastside of the 8900’ Mount Rose Summit, one can find the “new” trailhead for Mount Rose, some 75 yards behind the Welcome Plaza structure (in a SW direction).

The r/t distance is cute: The TH sign indicates “9.6 miles r/t” but a mid-point trail intersection sign notes: “2.7 miles to T/H” and “2.6 miles to Mt Rose”. ---Do the Math!--- (HA HA)

This trail is outstanding, a great starter trail or even a night hike route, it is that clearly defined!

The Peak’s summit register and steel post sign have been removed, due to its “Wilderness” location, I suspect.
