Kings County Highpoint Trip Report
Date: June 23, 2008
Author: Micah Schneider
The highpoint here is the Kiaimie mausoleum in Green Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
The main entrance of the cemetery is at 25th and 5th. The M and R trains both
stop at 25th and 4th, very convenient (one block) to the main gate. There are
other gates into the cemetery but, according to the groundskeepers, they are
open weekends only. Summer hours are 7-7pm seven days a week, the rest of the
year is 8-5pm. Previous reports mention a barbed wire fence. We saw no such
fence in evidence during our stroll through the cemetery.
We followed Battle Avenue to the false summit mentioned in previous reports.
At that spot is an impressive monument to the Battle of Brooklyn and worth a few
minutes to investigate. From that monument, the Kaimie Mausoleum is visible to
the north. It is at the top of a small rise and is the only structure of size
in it's vicinity. The entire walk, from the subway to the highpoint, was
approximately a half mile. We spent more time walking that distance than we
might have if we were more single minded of purpose, as this cemetery is
absolutely beautiful, with impressive tombs, monuments and views of NY at nearly
every turn.
