Rockland County Highpoint Trip Report

Rockhouse Mtn (1283 ft)

Mike Schwartz's report is still valid and this is still an easy hike and short bushwhack. Following the trail until the shoulder mentioned in Mike's report works well, as it avoids the thick stands of mountain laurel that line the trail up until that point. The shoulder is extremely obvious. There are several false summit atop the ridge but trending to the left will bring one to the true summit, which is covered in low brush and has a few boulders atop the highest point. This is maybe a 30 minute round trip from the trailhead.

Jackie Jones Mtn (1280+ ft)

Mike's and Dan Case's reports are both still valid. The pullout next to the gated road overlooks an impromptu dump and there was a very large rotting fish, a trout perhaps, sitting on a rock along the edge, lending a delightful tang to the humid, 90-degree air. The yellow trail is easy to follow past the Orak mansion and on up to the AT&T monstrosity just below the summit. From there, the fire tower beckons and can be climbed up to just below the top, which is locked. The views from the top of the tower are quite good, although the haze obscured much of what should have been seen. Maybe a 45 minute round trip with a pause at the top. Which one is higher? Don't know and don't care, as it took less than 2 hours to do both and hiking is hiking.
