Westchester County High Point Trip Report

BM Bailey (980+ ft)

Date: March 28, 2003
Author: Michael Schwartz

This is an update to my report of January 2000.

From the junction of CT 35 and CT 116 at Ridgefield, CT, go north 0.8 mile to a left turn onto Barrack Hill Road. Take Barrack Hill Road 2.3 miles to its end at Sleepy Hollow Road. Go right 0.3 mile to where Sleepy Hollow Road dead ends at the state line. There is room to park a couple of vehicles.

See my previous report for hiking directions. Note that this hike is considerably shorter than the approach from the NY side described in other reports. I had previously reported the benchmark missing, but found it this time around. About 9 1/2 feet east of the witness post, look for a depression between two flat, surface rocks. If you brush away the dirt and leaves in the depression, there sits the benchmark, marked "Bailey" with two dates, 1862 and 1966. On one of the rocks there are still very faint remnants of the painted white arrow pointing to the benchmark.
