Coshocton County High Point Trip Report

From the town of Brinkhaven, travel 6.2 miles east on US 62 to the tiny settlement of Stillwell. Turn south on County 27 and in 0.5 mile bear left on County 132. Continue south on County 132 for another 2.2 miles to an intersection with County 33. Turn right and watch for a large brown cabin on your right, near the crest in the road. This nice house (Bashoor #36058) has been built on top of the southernmost contour (area 1) which is the remnant of an old coal mining operation. Only a few traces of this contour remain in the edge of the woods and to the west. The area was apparently bulldozed to prepare the ground and yard around this house.

To visit area 2, return to the intersection of County 33 and 132. Proceed north and in about 0.3 mile you will find a path to the right which goes to an old cemetery. Park here and cross the road. The property here is posted as "No Hunting" so I felt it was okay to enter. After bushwhacking a short distance northwest along the edge of some large timber, I found a path of sorts that headed south up a hill and then southwest. Be wary of the old coal trenches which are still very evident in places. The path will soon disappear, but then you will see a modest rise in the woods to the west. More bushwhacking will get you to the top of the rise of area 2 (confirmed with GPS). It is unclear whether this area is natural, or just another old coal mine dump.

Return to your car and continue north on County 132 roughly another 0.8 mile to a large open area with an obvious rise off to your right (east). Stop at the grey house on the left side of the road. The lady who lives here is the granddaughter of the owners, and she allowed me to park in her yard and hike up the hill to the east. The view from the top of area 3 is pleasant, but the size of the contour is very small. While area 3 is probably not the highest contour, I think it may be the only natural highpoint left in Coshocton County.
