Grant County High Point Trip Report

Strawberry Mtn (9,040+ ft)

Date: August 1997
Author: Ken Jones

This peak is the highpoint of the Strawberry Mountains, a highly underrated Central Oregon range. One of the better trail hikes among the Oregon highpoints.

From John Day, head south on U.S. 395. Turn left on county road 65, which becomes Forest Route 15. Next, turn left on FR 16 which you'll follow for an estimated 2.5 miles. Another left, onto dirt FR 1640. This climbs to two trailheads; you want the first one (mistakenly labelled "Roads End TH" by the USFS - it's not at the end of the road) about 1/3 mile before the end of the road, at a switchback (elev ~7700').

Follow trails 201, 368, and 368B to the summit (they were signed, indicating "Strawberry Mountain" in 1997). Round trip is about 6.5 miles and 1300' of gain. Lovely!
