Blair County Highpoint Trip Report

Scheafer Head (2,950 ft)

This one ended up taking me longer than it should have, mostly because I wasn't paying enough attention. However, in the long run it actually worked out better.

The 2.2 miles to which Mike Schwartz refers starts at the strange turn you have to make to get to Blue Knob. The faint dirt road is really faint at the paved road until you know where it is, then you have a "Doh!" moment. It is just past #363 (white house on left of road, where the power lines come across the road, at the edge of the field, and just before the highest point in the road).

I wasn't sure and ended up talking to the landowner due west of the HP on the east side of the road. He gave me much information on access and routes (and places with views, etc...). The owner of the access road lets people park there during hunting season, so I took this as sufficient permission for our purposes.

As I walked in, it was obvious where vehicles had driven. I stayed on the (by now) obvious dirt road until the crest, at which point I was about 200 yards northeast of the HP. Based on my earlier conversation, rather than going straight up, I tended slightly more south to the ridge then west to the top. This added another 50 yards or so but was much easier than a more frontal assault. Top was surprisingly flat after the climb. With the ferns, the actual high point is open to interpretation. Took a northeast compass bearing down and ended up about 30 feet from my entry point on the dirt road.

Avoid this one during hunting season.
