Luzerne County High Point Trip Report

Cherry Ridge

Since it was raining, I spent most of the morning trying to motivate myself into going. This was to be my first county highpoint and I didn't want it to turn out a bust. Finally, at 9:30 a.m. I left.

Mike Schwartz's directions from were fairly accurate. I made it to the game lands and even saw some deer as I drove in on the gravel road. Just south of Opperman Pass, I saw some orange blazes and orange plastic arrows nailed to a pair of trees to the right of the road. However, I didn't see a pullout or a "rusty metal apparatus." None-the-less, I assumed that this must be the trail and started on my way in.

The rain wasn't too bad. Just a light drizzle and the trail is indeed very obscure in some places, careening through some very dense forest at times. This helped with the rain enough that I didn't need my poncho.

After about a half a mile, the trail just vanished into the wilderness. I spent about 20 minutes bushwhacking, trying to find the old railroad bed, to no avail. My feet were sopping wet by this time and myself, disgusted, headed back, vowing to come back when it had stopped raining. But so as not to make the day a total loss, I decided to try for one of the highpoints in Wyoming County, PA.
