Potter County Highpoint Trip Report

four areas (2,580+ ft)

Author: Fred Lobdell

Lyon Hill: I tried to thoroughly walk this field but it was hard to figure out where the high ground might be as it was in waist-high grass this summer.

Bailey Hill: The ground south of the tower seemed slightly higher than that right at the tower but I thought the highest ground was underneath a large tree on the east side of the road a little south of the tower.

Area 0.5 mile southeast of White Knoll: I followed Mike Schwartz's directions, except that I ascended the ridge too soon and had to bushwhack south along it for a while. This was but a mild foretaste of what was to come.

Area 0.7 mile south-southwest of White Knoll: The BM is still decorated as Mike Schwartz described it in his excellent trip report. The small white sign that normally appears on a witness post is bolted to the flagpole. Follow Mike's report all the way. The summit ridge was apparently clear-cut some years ago, and where there used to be trees there are now lost and lots of raspberry bushes. This makes for an awful bushwhack. I was glad I had long pants, although cowboy's chaps might have been more appropriate, and a catcher's shin guards would provide still more protection. The dried blood on my copy of Mike's trip report testifies to the nature of this bushwhack. It's difficult to tell exactly where the highest ground is, especially with the thick brush.
