Warren County Highpoint Trip Report

1 1/4 miles NNE of Clendening Corners (2,231 ft)

Date: August 6, 2008
Authors: SueAnn Miller and Frank Price

Previous reports are still good. There are now apparently more homes than there were in 2000 and several were occupied on a Monday in August. The road is good with a few potholes in one low spot that were no problem for our high clearance vehicle and probably navigable with care by other vehicles. We drove until the road began to drop again but we never encountered a locked gate. There is no need to go beyond the first crest of this side road anyway.

A sign at a drive at the crest of the road (just beyond the clearing shown on the topo) says "Camp High Point" and has no family name. However, the enhanced A-frame at the end of the short drive appears to be a family summer camp rather than an establishment of some organization. Such retreats are called camps in the Adirondacks, and apparently the tradition is similar in the Alleghenies. Anyway, a utility clearing behind this building and the adjacent brown trailer/cabin hybrid eases access to the highest ground. A short bushwhack from further along the road cutting in at the long new drive just before the road begins to descend might avoid some property issues. This drive is flanked by mowed lawn and signed Burford but that home is not visible from the road as are the two previous camps. There were no posted signs (yet) in the area of the high ground.
