York County Highpoint Trip Report

Myna (my dog) and I ventured the short half hour to BSA Camp Tuckahoe to tackle
the high point of York County, PA. We parked just outside of the camp HQ
building and started in. I closed my eyes when we passed the sign on the main
gate that stated "No Dogs" and Myna cant read anyways!
Finding our way around the camp was a bit tricky. I got frustrated trying to
find Maple Lodge and figured I'll just start up the hill off trail. I had
previous marked the approximate location of the HP on my GPS so I figured how
hard could it be! Well, going straight up the hill through the laurel brush and
ground clutter was a bit more than I asked for. We eventually made it to the
col area and found the jeep trails and logged area mentioned in previous reports.
After taking the jeep road that heads east and steeply uphill to the
HP area we were in good shape.
We walked along the trail a little ways and then headed off to the right (south)
to try and find the small cairn that Don Derosiers built to mark the HP back on
4/16/2006.
After wandering around for a few minutes in the best looking area, I found a
small jumble of placed rocks that could only be Don's cairn. It sits about 135
yards off the trail in the woods right along the edge of the hill where the land
drops off sharply to the south. I dug around, loosened up a few rocks of my own
and added to the pile.
We were smart on the way back down and followed the jeep road down then the red
blazed trail pass the logging area and then the red/yellow trail steeply
downhill that comes out at the sign for Conoy at Maple Lodge. From here it was
a quick 5 minute stroll to the truck.
