Spartanburg County Highpoint Trip Report

Bird Mtn (1,496 ft)

Date: late July 1998
Author: John Mitchler

North of Greenville at NC border. Easy. Exit off of I-26 onto SH 14 into Landrum. Pass through town and over the railroad tracks and turn right (northwest) onto US 176. Proceed 1.4 miles, then turn left (south) onto Backburn (?) Road and take the first road right (not a poor driveway). This road is not on the topo map. It is a wide gravel road marked private and also marked as the "Bird Mtn. Registered Heritage Site (SC DNR)". This road winds 0.9 miles through pleasant woods to the summit where you'll be shocked by the site of a ranch house bracketed by a huge observatory and a caboose!

John Trent and his wife were very kind in discussing the caboose with us. It is CC&O 1056 (year 1918). This is a special place being preserved by special people. "Good Job and Thank You" to the Trent's!
