Hartley County High Point Trip Report

one small area, 200 feet east of the state line, 3/8 mile north of BM 276 (4,465+ ft)

Date: June 4, 2002
Author: Michael Schwartz

Used David Olson's trip notes, and was able to drive all the way to the highpoint due to very dry conditions. From the jog on NM 102 at the state line, go south on Pipas Road for 4.1 miles, jog slightly right (west) then south on Richardson Road (homemade signed Dead End) for about 1 1/2 miles, where the better road swings right past an occupied house. Continue south on a lesser two-track road, passing through two gates.

From the second gate, the highpoint ridge is visible. The road deteriorates even more, but in dry weather can be driven by high clearance (4WD preferable) vehicle to within 100 feet of the summit. Total distance from NM 102 to highpoint is 9.3 miles.

The two-track road is sandy, passed through many dry mud holes, and passed by a dry pond near the highpoint. Without high clearance at least, this would be long road walk. In wet conditions, bring 4WD.
